CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY :
The mechanism of action of topical salicylic acid in corn, callus, wart, & inflammatory hyperkeratoses may include two pathways, both leading to desquammation of corneocytes. Salicylic acid reduces intercellular cohesiveness of the horny cells by dissolving the intercellular cement material. Salicylic acid also reduces the pH of the stratum corneum, thereby increasing hydration and softening. In inflammatory hyperkeratoses, like psoriasis, ichythyosis, palmoplantar keratoderma, etc, the keratolytic action of SA-6 /SA-12 causes desquamation of stratum corneum, thereby ensuring better penetration of the topical corticosteroid (of desired potency) used separately.
